Australia Part #3

Crickey! Melbourne have been action packed since day one and it’s just an awesome place to be!
After spending less than a week at a hostel I’ve moved into a 2 bdrm. apartment on Lonsdale Street in with Anja & Kristian. It’s nothing fancy but a great location in the city center and only 10 mins. walk to my University.

School’s out! Started Monday last week. Successfully enrolled in two 3D courses and one 2D Animation class. I’ve taken an extra course called ‘Introduction to Australian Society’ – basically it’s designed to deepen your knowledge of Australian history, culture and society. So there’s something to look forward to (and heaps of work on the 3D part ahead!).

Hooroo – og på genhør!

Australia Part #2

Days seems to pass by at double speed in Melbourne. It’s a buzz to be here! I’ve moved into a hostel yesterday hence I haven’t been able to find an accommodation yet. I hope to have something settled in the next few days as my first classes begins tomorrow and it would be nice to have some security on the “home”-front as soon as possible so I can focus on school.
Melbourne is quite expensive – generally about 20-30% more expensive compared to Copenhagen-prices so I might take up a part time job for a few months so I have funds to travel when the semester is finished.
I look forward to starting school tomorrow. It’s gonna be exciting to join a 3D course and learn the Maya software. Hopefully I can get up to speed really quick and create something sick!
There are so many things I would like to see in and about Melbourne and I look forward to getting more time to explore tourist style! Here’s some more photos…

Australia Part #1

Early Thursday morning I arrived in Melbourne after a long 27-hour flight from Copenhagen. My first impression of Melbourne in one word? Awesome! – Above any expectations! The city just got an extremely pleasant and cool vibe about it and is very inspiring and lovely to walk about in – at least the parts I’ve been in so far. I have only been here for 4 days now and I still got shitload to see and experience and I cannot wait to take in more of this amazing and beautiful city!
I am very excited to finally be here and I am looking forward to next week enrollment at RMIT and meeting some of the people I will be studying and spending the next 5 months with.

Oh, and here’s some tourist pictures :)

cph PRESENT/PAST

Things have been very busy lately so it have been scarcely with time to update my blog – or produce anything for that matter.
A few weeks ago I finished my 1st year exam at DMJX and are now cleared for my exchange program to RMIT in Melbourne. The case was to create a visual identity for an audiovisual event on Copenhagens history hosted by the Museum Of Copenhagen. Event name, logo, poster, website banner & spot was all part of the assignment.

This is how my spot turned out:

On Tuesday I will be leaving for Australia – looking forward to keeping you guys updated with my progress and work from down there. See ya!

Processing #1

Images made with Processing – creative code. I combined 2 photos in different blend modes and added some  random ‘glitch’ effects overlayed by different patterns.

Original photos used:

If you download Processing (v2.0a5) and copy/paste the code beneath and then changing the “baggrund = loadImage(“pete.jpg”);” & “billede = loadImage(“surf1.jpg”);” with images of your own choice (remember to rename the .jpg and change it in the code), then you can play around with different glitch effects. See which keyboard key’s to use at the bottom of the code.
If you have any questions, then please ask – and I will try my best to come up with an answer (still rookie at processing, only done it for a week or so :)).

Code:

int filterStyrke = 2;
float minFarveFuckUpFaktor = 0.8;
float maxFarveFuckUpFaktor = 1.3;

New Website Design

So it’s been almost 4 weeks now since my last blog post and the main reason for that is basically that I haven’t really done much visuals in that period. I took a week out on holiday back home with my family in Jutland, and the past 2 weeks we’ve been doing ActionScripting in class – not particular any fancy visuals coming out of that (for the time being at least).
My time for playing around with graphics in my spare time have been somewhat limited due to all the practical preparations regarding my exchange program at RMIT next semester. Application forms, course selections, scholarships, assurances, flat hunting, moving out, financing, packing, selling, flight tickets & my list just keeps on going. But the anticipation of taking off to Australia wouldn’t be near this big if it wasn’t for all the preparations that it do requires, which does emphasize even more the great journey it will be (at least for me) to travel down under for half a year. Can’t wait for 3rd of July :)

I haven’t been completely idle tho’. I’ve been roaming around in After Effects as usual whenever I have a bit of extra time. Also I have begun doing some basic 3D animation and modeling in Maxon Cinema4D and it’s such an awesome software and powerful tool – really excited about learning this program and combining it with After Effects!

To the headline: Yesterday I was fooling around in Photoshop with my “eyes” and think it turned out pretty interesting. For a fairly long time I have wanted to re-design and optimize my website in the direction of being a portfolio site for my work – and being less homepagie. The design is a bit more simple now and more clean to look at in the sense of not distracting the audience from the showcases. Possibly the best thing I did was to actually add my videos from Vimeo instead of YouTube – the Vimeo player is just more sophisticated to look at and less bossy.

Anyways, I hope you like the new look of my website – and please drop in from time to time at danielby.me for more video uploads :)

Showreel #1

My first reel! Including some parts of my new and old footage. I struggled a bit to find the right song to give the right feeling, but think the outcome turned out good. As part of my application for 2d and 3d animation courses on my exchange student program to RMIT, I had to put together a reel to apply to these.

Hope you like it! It was fun to make and I am looking forward to making new footage for future reels :)

Stop Motion

Andreas, a classmate of mine, and myself spend a few days making a stop motion sequence with matchsticks and wood. This was my first time off in stop motion and was quite interesting. The effects, look and feeling you can achieve are quite cool and really hard to reproduce in animation software. I’m surely gonna dive in into more stop motion whenever I get the time.. First things first! :)
We painted our piece of wood to use it as greenscreen and added rest of the elements afterwards. The pictures were captured with Canon 1000D and compiled in After Effects. A bit of Vibrance/Saturation adjustments are the only effects added to the original images.

Please enjoy in 720p

Motion Graphics: part1

4 short videos created this week in Adobe After Effects as school assignments at Danmarks Mediehøjskole.

Please watch in 720p(HD)

#1 Animation based on a specific part of a song given as assignment. The piece will be piled together with 20 other 10 sec animations for a music video made by every student in class. The music is composed by Carsten Skov for the project.

#2 Animation based on music.

#3 Animation with stroke. Inspired by the movie Drive (a lot!).

#4 Animation done with a single image.

iPhone App Design – Naturstyrelsen

In the past week I have been working on developing a concept and design for a iPhone app for The Danish Ministry of the Environment : Nature Agency. Together with two classmates we decided to design an app that makes it easy for the user to find shelters in the danish forests and nature. There are currently more than 900 shelters in Denmark and varies from small huts for only a few persons to big shelters for more than 20 persons – and they are all free to use.
At the moment there is no easy way to find these shelters. The Nature Agency have an online map of the shelters in Denmark, but it is not very handy and it is not possible to get map directions. The second possibility is to buy the shelter guidebook, but it will cost you 130 kr. – and it’s not digital.

It’s a pity that there aren’t many danes who takes advantage of the possibility of using these shelters and enjoying the lovely nature there is all around us. Maybe it’s because it’s too difficult and time consuming at the moment to locate these shelters – or people are simply not aware of the shelters. We want more people to go outside and experience the fantastic nature we have in Denmark, and we believe that an app that makes it easy and fast to search and locate the shelters can get more people out. Camping out is a great way of experiencing the nature – and it is completely free. What is there not to love?

The design is quite basic and we’ve only had 1 day to execute it due to spending more time on the app functionalities and defining the wireframe. So taking that into consideration I think we managed to make a fine v. 1.0 design :)

A funny and interesting app debut. Surely not the last time I will work on app design..
